Do you need more confidence in telecommunications? The rise of virtual and telephone consultations has transformed healthcare delivery. However, the rapid shift towards remote consultations has often outpaced formal training. Many healthcare professionals, though experts in clinical care, feel less equipped to navigate the nuances of virtual communication - particularly in areas such as effective symptom assessment, managing patient distress, and building rapport through a screen or phone.

Our new evidence-based telecommunications study day is designed to refine these essential skills through a blend of interactive observation, role-play, and lecture-based learning. This course will equip you to assess and support patients and their caregivers effectively via video calls and telephone consultations. Our goal is to ensure we continue providing high-quality, compassionate care as we adapt to the evolving landscape of healthcare communication.

Dr Farzana Virani - Consultant in Palliative Medicine

Dr Virani completed her specialty training the Thames Valley Deanery in 2022, and is currently a Consultant in Palliative Medicine in Oxford. Dr Virani also provides supportive palliative care to patients undergoing Early Phase Clinical Trials, Heart Failure and CAR-T treatments.

Paula Johnson RGN, DN, BA Palliative care, PG Dip HPE - Deputy Lead Specialist Nurse for Palliative Care.
Hospital and community palliative care teams, Sobell & Katharine House Hospices, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Paula worked as a District nurse for 10 years before completing a BA in palliative care. This enabled Paula to focus on her area of interest and take on a new role as Macmillan community clinical nurse specialist, a position she held for 6 years. During this time, Paula completed a Postgraduate Diploma, which led to her appointment as a Senior Lecturer in Adult nursing at Oxford Brookes University, a position she held for 14 years. This educational role enabled Paula to keep her knowledge current whilst teaching students the principles of palliative care and symptom management. In 2019, Paula returned to practice, joining the Community palliative care team.
